Safely Remove Hardware Desktop Shortcut

If you use USB devices a lot, then you know how much of a pain it is to go down to the toolbar, click on the icon, then select your device and remove it. Of course, you may click on the wrong icon, which then you have to close…it would be much easier if there was an icon on the desktop that you could click, or even better, just assigning a shortcut! This is possible, just go here. This works in XP and Vista, but it may not work in Windows 7.

One step that this article does not cover is how to change the icon to match the one that is in the toolbar. To do this, right-click on the shortcut and go to properties.

Then, go to the “change icon” button.

Change the “Look for icons in this file:” to

%windir%\system32\HotPlug.dll

Press enter.

It will be the first icon to appear. Now, your icon will look like the one in the tray and will open up the “Safely Remove Hardware” with just a double-click or through a keyboard shortcut.

Enjoy!
